Presentations

The concerns of EdSpace with IPR and copyright questions have been central from an early stage in our work.  We have developed a close working relationship with the Legal Services group in the University of Southampton and this relationship has been developed further since the beginning of the HEFCE/HEAcademy/JISC Open Educational Resources Projects earlier in 2009.  There are 6 groups of people across the University involved in some way or other, in OER Projects which are either based here, or at other institutions.  On 14 December 2009, we hosted an IPR Workshop in the Assembly series that we are running as part of the Benefits' Realisation for the Edspace Project.  Our short report provides some detail of the event and we are going to work early next year on establishing further areas for work in this area.

On 4 November, 2009, we hosted a mini-Assembly at the University of Southampton.  The Assembly was entitled: "Traditional Educational Repositories vs. Web 2.0 Resource Sharing" and ran 10:30-4:00.  We welcomed 15 visitors and had a really full agenda which was both stimulating and informative.  At the event, some of our Project members presented new views of our work here at Southampton:  Dave Millard presented on "Moving traditional learning and teaching repositories to Web 2.0" and Ali Dickens led a session in the afternoon which involved analysing risk in IPR and copyright issues.   We enjoyed the event very much, thanks to everyone who cam along and we are now planning a larger Assembly for February 2010 which will focus on providing a way for people new to this activity - developing their own ways to share educational resources.  We will be circulating the details as soon as they are finalised.

Hugh Davis and Su White presented the latest work for EdShare at ALT-C 2009 "In dreams begin responsibility: choice, evidence and change", Manchester, UK 8-10 September 2009.
 
Debra Morris was invited to present EdShare to the newly formed, University discussion group for online resources for PGR students on Wednesday 11 March 2009.  This presentation was one aspect of a much wider discussion of work continuing across the University to provide online support for our post-graduate research community.  It is clear that EdShare has a significant part to play in this important area.

On 29 January, 2009, Debra Morris and Jessie Hey gave a presentation as part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences Education Committee meeting (this Faculty includes the following disciplines: biological sciences, medicine, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, and psychology).  This meeting is a monthly event for the Faculty; they typically include a presentation by, or discussion with, the wider academic community.  EdShare had booked this date back in the autumn.  We were first up on a busy agenda and enjoyed an engaging and stimulating discussion in which every single person in attendance participated!  The debate included: licensing for sharing, broader IPR, commenting functionality within EdShare, relevance of the eBay model of feedback, EdShare linking to reward and recognition for teaching, EdShare's role in providing teachers with ways of evidencing their different contributions to teaching,  dissemination of EdShare as well as sustainability, quality reviewing for EdShare content, EdShare supporting the work of the Learning & Teaching Enhancement Bids across the University, links between EdShare and Blackboard (VLEs), accessibility of EdShare content, W3C compliance of the EdShare design and, finally, opportunities that EdShare offers for engagement with third parties, especially employers.  We appreciated the contribution from one of the student representatives on this Committee to this active debate. 
We believe that this positive and encouraging reception is indicative of the impact that our Project work (as well as other changes within the institution and the sector) is having on the debate around sharing, making visible and curriculum development.

Hugh Davis and Debra Morris presented to the JISC Working Group covering our Institutional Exemplar Programme on Friday 5 December 2008.  We spoke to this presentation and explored a range of issues raised in discussion with the Group.

At a lunchtime, Staff Development Seminar in the School of Mathematics, Jessie Hey and Debra Morris gave this presentation, on Monday 1 December, 2008.

On 21 November, 2008, Debra Morris went to the JISC Search, Web 2.0 and Personalisation Projects meeting at Savoy Place, London and gave a 3 minute presentation to the other Projects represented at the event.

On 2 October, 2008 the EdSpace Project presented as part of the kick-off meeting for the EASiHE Project in Learning Societies Lab., ECS at the University of Southampton.
 
The second EdSpace Steering Group meeting took place on 22 September, 2008.  Hugh Davis and Debra Morris presented on project progress and priorities for the project in the next phase.

On 1 August, 2008, Debra Morris presented about EdShare at the Repositories Fringe meeting in Edinburgh.
 
In June 2008 we had a series of meetings with different groups across the University to present and discuss the role of Edshare in their work.  During the morning of 26 June, 2008, Debra Morris gave a presentation to the School of Medicine eLearning team at Southampton General Hospital. On 24 June, 2008, Jessie Hey and Debra Morris gave a presentation as part of the University Library Staff meeting.  This presentation was received really positively by members of Library staff.

On 19 June 2008, we gave two presentations: the first to the Information Systems Services (University Computing Services) Web Applications team.  This presentation was designed to engage this group with the role of EdShare alongside other services they support for education including, Blackboard and the University Portal, SUSSED.  This group has also been involved in the development of the University Research Repository.  In the afternoon, we visited the Learning and Teaching Seminar for the School of Psychology and gave this presentation.

On 17 June, we went to the Health Care Innovation Unit ( an academic group within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences) weekly team meeting and gave a presentation.  

We gave a presentation on the developing work of the EdSpace Project to the regular meeting of the Deputy Heads of School (Education), this is a high-level, University education strategy group, on Thursday 22 May 2008.

Jessie Hey gave a presentation to the Education Development Network Group meeting held at Winchester School of Art on Thursday 8 May 2008.
